Using creative tools to embed collections within education

Research (”Inspiration, Identity, Learning: The Value of Museums”, 1st and 2nd Study and “What did you learn at the museum today”) demonstrates a number of key points:

  • Schools are increasing their use of musuems.
  • Teachers think museums are important in education.
  • Students enjoy visiting museums and fond them useful for school work.
  • Museums inspire learners.
  • Museums provide resources for all curriculum areas.
  • Museums complement formal education.
  • Museums add interest and understanding to learning.

In parallel to this, The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has laid out a series of objectives for museums to further their role in the education system.  Some key points are:

  • Musuems will fulfill their potential as learning resources
  • Museums collections will be more dynamic and better used
  • Museums will work more closely with each other and partners outside the sector

Lexara have developed  a position between museums and the education sector to help.   Our technology supports the work of museums and is based on a sound understanding of Web 2.0 principles, the developing world of social media and enabling user-generated content. It enables museums to be more creative delivering the value of their collections to education, whether it be through publishing on their own websites or by providing content to schools.

Museums can empower learners to develop their own learning resources with archives and collections, as well as support learners with support and feedback.
