Project SILVER
Lexara technologies to underpin major £1.9 million government supported digital e-learning initiative.
Lexara, in partnership with the Bridgeman Art Library (BAL) and Open University’s Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) announce the launch of a major 3 year collaborative R&D project, part funded by the Government’s Technology Strategy Board. The goal of the partnership is to bring together advanced technology and high quality content to enable a new level of interactive learning in the years to come. More project details can be found at www.silvereducation.co.uk.
Together, the partnership will develop a powerful interactive learning offering based on the latest semantic and intelligent web principles allowing people to utilize multimedia in new, engaging and challenging ways for learning benefit. The resulting technology will enable learners and teachers to visualise complex conceptual relationships between images, videos, text and audio content in order to explore alternative view points and perspectives.
The project will also develop a set of ‘preloaded’ content bundles relating to learning outcomes set out in the National Curriculum. Teachers will be able to use these predefined content bundles without modification or use them as a basis for developing lessons more refined to their individual needs. Content will be made available for a variety of hardware such as whiteboards and mobile devices including PDAs.
Explaining the Technology Strategy Board’s support for Project SILVER, chief executive David Evans said: “The UK is well known for its cutting edge science, technology and innovation. We are working with businesses to develop the marketable products we’ll need in the future. That’s why we’re supporting this project, which aims to deliver a new approach to the use of multimedia assets in schools, further and higher education and in the workplace.”
Ben Hayman, CEO of Lexara commented: “Having the Government’s support to work with great partners such as KMi and BAL on long term product evolution in this area is very exciting for us. There is a wealth of knowledge which remains largely untapped within rich digital media today. Through the continued evolution of our Magic Studio™ product family and the work of the SILVER partnership we can see great potential to offer new levels of dynamic and interactive learning in the years to come.”
Lady Bridgeman of the Bridgeman Art Library: “We all know that our brains are most receptive to learning when an idea is brought to life – not just through written words but through images and sounds, and when we are encouraged to interact with a subject. We are delighted to be part of this crucial project which is set to revolutionise the digital learning experience.”
